將打算隔出來 (parenthetic) 的句子用逗點包起來 (I)

• The best way to see a country, unless you are pressed for time, is to travel on foot.

這是一個不易引用的規則。

我們通常很難決定一個單字，像是 however，或是一小段片語，是否應該被隔出來 (parenthetic)。
如果逗點對句子流暢度的影響很輕微，那麼大可放心的省略這組逗點。但是請注意，
不論對句子流暢度的影響是大還是小，絕對不要只省略一個逗點而留下另一個。
下列兩種寫法絕對是錯的：

• Marjorie’s husband, Colonel Nelson paid us a visit yesterday.
• My brother you will be pleased to hear, is now in perfect health.
  

日期通常會包含不同部分的文字或數字。請以下列方式撰寫日期：

• February to July, 1992
• April 6, 1986
  

請注意我們習慣用下列寫法來省略逗點：

• 6 April 1988

最後這種寫法是非常好的日期表示方式；用文字隔開數字，很容易就可以理解其意義。

在直述句中的人名或稱謂需要被隔出來。

• If, Sir, you refuse, I cannot predict what will happen.
• Well, Susan, this is a fine mess you are in.
  

像是 etc.、i.e.、以及 e.g. 這樣的縮寫、學位的縮寫、名字之後的稱謂，都需要以下列的方式隔開。

• Letters, packages, etc., should go here.
• Horace Fulsome, Ph.D., presided.
• Rachel Simonds, Attorney
• The Reverend Harry Lang, S.J.
