加入 's 來形成單數所有格

基本上，子音結尾的字都可以這樣加。例如，

• Charles’s friend
• Burns’s poems
• the witch’s malice
  

但是也有例外：

• 以 es 或 is 結尾的特定人名
• Jusus’
• for conscience’ sake
• for righteousness’ sake
  

此外，像 Moses’ Law 與 Isis’ template 我們一般會寫成

• the law of Moses
• the template of Isis
  

代名詞的所有格就不加一撇了，像是 hers, its, theirs, yours，以及 ours。但是不定代名詞的所有格又要加一撇了：

• one’s rights
• somebody else’s umbrella
  

常見的寫作錯誤是把 it’s 與 its 搞混。 前者是縮寫，其意義是 it is。後者就是所有格了：

• It’s a wise dog that scratches its own fleas.
